The Open Directory Project
uses volunteer editors to catalogue the web. It was launched
in 1998 as NewHoo. It was acquired by Netscape in November
1998 when the company pledged that anyone would be able
to use information from the directory through an open
license agreement. A lot of search engines and directories
use Open Directory data including Euroseek, Google, Hotbot
and Splut.

Overture sells its main listings on a per click basis
which it says improves relevancy. The contrasting view
is that many sites of importance are not listed because
they refuse to pay for a listing. Non-paid results come
from Inktomi. Overture listings appear as “sponsored”
or “featured” sites on many search engines
and directories including AltaVista, Lycos, MSN, Netscape,
Search.com and Yahoo (Not Yahoo UK).
